From Vision to Action: Empowering Parkland's Healing Journey
In the wake of the Parkland, FL shootings, I co-founded Professionals United for Parkland (PU4P), a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the mental health needs of the affected community. Recognizing the long-term impact of such a traumatic event, particularly on young people, I collaborated with a local licensed therapist to establish this initiative.. We leveraged my alumni network from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and local connections to assemble a team of licensed clinicians. I spearheaded the initial fundraising efforts through a t-shirt campaign that I personally designed and managed, which provided the seed money to get going. I also created the branding, logo and initial website. Our efforts culminated in securing 501(c)(3) status, enabling us to operate as a recognized non-profit organization. This lead to the ability to assemble a team of volunteers to increase brand quality and visibility.
PU4P's mission focuses on identifying and meeting both immediate and long-term mental health needs in the South Florida community following the tragedy. We offer a range of evidence-based services, including community and professional education, clinical training, direct clinical services, and support for clinicians. Our approach is collaborative, working alongside other local organizations to identify service gaps and ensure comprehensive community support. Importantly, we maintain a strictly non-political stance, focusing solely on mental health and well-being. Through these efforts, PU4P has made a significant impact, potentially affecting the lives of many in the community struggling with the aftermath of the tragedy.
Of note as well, during this time I worked with another alumnus to orchestrate a “Times Square Takeover“ of multiple digital displays I myself designed to honor those lost during the Parkland tragedy.
I’m proud to say these were covered through earned media and featured on CNN, Time and People among many local new outlets.
